The Mangatawhiri stream near Pokeno marks the 1863 boundary established
by Kingi Tawhaiao separating British-settled areas to the north and Kingitanga
territory to the south in the lead up to the Waikato Land Wars. When British
troops invaded the Waikato by crossing this border in July 1863, war commenced.
In the intervening years, the wetlands and waterways of the area have been
drained and a reduced Mangatawhiri stream at Te Aukati Ki Mangatawhiri runs
under what is now SH1. This isolated section of riverbed and scrub backing on
to the highway is the subject of the series Aukati/Boundary.
This work was originally created for #GRTSTHRD, a 2014 Tangent Collective exhibition.

Sea of Trees (2010) depicts the forest at the base of Mt Fuji, Aokigahara-jukai, focusing on the location’s status as a popular suicide landmark. In addition to the dominant reputation of the forest as a site of the horrific, the forest offers a unique ecological environment, as a forest that grew upon a volcanic plateau post-eruption. The forest is home to a number of nature trails. Given the site’s horrific reputation there is the issue of spectacle in depicting it photographically. To address this I employed a system for making photographs, photographing every 100m; creating one set of images within the forest, one from the forest’s border looking outward at the bordering highway. The result is a series of dual works, in the form of vertically stacked diptychs. The tiles of the works include fragments derived from web searches about the location, passing between Japanese and English using an auto translation tool.

In Port Series (2012) I was
interested in exploring how far I could see into the distant horizon, based on my height above sea level. I wanted to layer this experiment in distance and vision with New Zealand’s nautical territorial
boundaries. Using a combination of mathematic formulae, elevation and proximity to city port sites, the work became an exploration of both visual perception and state territory.

Surface Expressions (2015) is a study of the Wairakei geothermal area in the central North Island. It draws attention to the region’s unique natural features and to the human forces that have formed its current state.Victorian-era Wairakei was a world renowned and exotic geothermal tourist destination. In the mid-twentieth century it was radically transformed by its conversion to a site for generating electricity. Through this intervention, the underlying geothermal system was irrevocably altered: the spectacular Geyser Valley was extinguished; the steaming craters of Karapiti were revealed. More recently, a man-made geyser has come to accompany the power station in this disrupted landscape. The photographs in Surface Expressions offer glimpses of the land forms of Wairakei today. The publication (see Books) takes a wider view, incorporating found text dating from the late nineteenth century through to the present day. These newspaper clippings, advertising materials and Trip Advisor ratings speak in the vernacular of their respective times and frame social ideas and expectations of tourist attractions.

Its works offer frame-filled views of terrain: forestry tract flora; hydro dam edifices; falling river water; scenic trails and lookouts. Visual studies of physical barriers and free-flowing water act as proxies for themes of stasis and change within an environment.

Output as an artist book, Cascade was first shown in Open Book, a travelling photobook show (see Books).
